Mary Oliver had an eye
Like a scientist
And a way with words
Like a children’s book writer,
Grown up.

I honestly don’t know what
I like more
Nature or a nature poet’s
Enthralling words.

They both have the effect
Of out-of-this-world wonder
With the mind blowing,
Heart touching reality,
That they are, in fact,
Talking about what is
In and a part of our
Everyday world.

Mary Oliver has helped
So many people,
Live day to day,
With wonder.
She was full of hope.
It silently exploded
In all of her works.

Even in darkness
She found something
To praise.

Like she wrote,
“Someone I loved
Once gave me a box
Full of darkness.
It took me years
To understand that
This too
Was a gift.”

To Mary, it was all gift.
And I’ll try
To carry that torch
Since she has left
This mortal coil.

I aspire to write
Like Mary Oliver.
So simple,
But so profound,
