lyrics

“What happens to a dream deferred?”
He pondered with the written word
Langston Hughes was my introduction
To the terrible problem of segregation
And proved along with so many of his brothers
That heart and mind, regardless of color,
Beat with an undying forcefulness
And that a person of great resourcefulness
Can change the trajectory of the world
Even with simply written words
His poetry broad sweeping and succinct
Was like a great African river you drink
He showed such an aptitude for language
And his poetry showed such a deep range
That we have his works in volumes
Now in a million bedrooms
We have to deal with the reality of race
And how much better with minds that are great
I’m glad that I can call him a friend
And that I can help the problem of racism end
